Happy Fall!

Thank you to all the parents, guardians, grandparents, faculty, staff, and community members who participated in this year’s Grandpal’s Celebration on September 30. A special thanks to Meredith Husnik and her team for coordinating the night. Dr. Tate’s and Mrs. McCullars’ support was instrumental. Another big thank you to Mrs. Swope’s 5th grade Enrichment class for creating the welcome video and to Mrs. Gallafassi for running the video. The entire celebration was a smashing success! Hundreds of students escorted their grandpals throughout the school showing them artwork, taking pictures, and introducing them to Foxie. Our school truly shined.

If you haven’t had a chance to check out Edgewood Gear, head over to our website. You will find new items from socks to water bottles to umbrellas not to mention a restock of popular items like sweatshirts and t-shirts.

Edgewood Night Out has started off strong! Our first ENO raised over $800! Please continue to support our local Edgewood restaurants the second Monday of every month.

As we look towards the next nine weeks, we are excited about the Turkey Trot on November 7. This long standing Edgewood tradition is back in-person this year! Please join us in cheering on our Edgewood Eagles as they run, have fun, and support our school.

As always, thank you for supporting our school with both your time and your finances. You help make Edgewood the best it can be!

Carrie Carter

PTO President, 2021-2022

Happy Fall to our wonderful Edgewood Family!  It has been nice enjoying the cooler weather the last few days.  I hope you all embraced a nice, long weekend with your families.  Edgewood faculty and staff wrapped up conferences and participated in professional learning on Friday and Monday, and we are all excited to move into the 2nd quarter of the 2021-2022 school year.

We are all looking forward to implementing a house system at Edgewood this quarter.  It will begin with a house sorting system where students, faculty, and staff will be sorted into one of the following houses:

  1. Believer, “Hivo”- Hungarian (light blue)

  2. Diligence, “Assidu”- French (blue)

  3. Gratitude, “Maholo”- Hawaiian (green)

  4. Kindness, “Druh” - Czech (orange)

  5. Positive Attitude, “Xingfu” - Chinese  (yellow)

  6. Courage, “Coraje” - Spanish (black)

  7. Compassion, “Yurushi” -Japanese (white)

  8. Wisdom, “Jihye”- Korean (pink)

  9. Perseverance, “Azim” - Turkish (purple)

  10. Respect, “Stima” - Romanian (red)

The purpose of this system is to build character and community within our school.  Once sorted into a house, the students will remain in that house for their entire time at Edgewood Elementary.  We will have “House Days” with competition and team building activities.  This is to promote student and faculty relationships that will follow them throughout their days at Edgewood.  Our school slogan will be “Ten Houses, One Family.”  We are excited about this and cannot wait to share it with our students and with you all.

The next three months will hold a lot of fun activities at Edgewood including our Turkey Trot, Veteran’s Day Program, 2nd Grade Market Days, Red Ribbon Week, and so much more.  We appreciate the support of our families, and we are thankful for the memories that we are able to create with and for our students.

Let us continue to live out our Edgewood motto, “Best You, Best Me, Best We” as we work together to help maximize each of our student’s unique potential.  It is truly great to be an Edgewood Eagle and Homewood Patriot!  If you need anything, please do not hesitate to reach out to me at any time.

Book checkout is going great!

We are now teaching kindergartners and first graders how to use the shelfmark: a tool to save the spot on the shelf where the book belongs so the reader can look at the book and decide if it’s a good fit, then if not, put the book back in the correct spot. This means that your child may be bringing home some very interesting books! Their Fiction selection is limited to picture books, but their Non-Fiction selection is a wide range; they may bring home some very fat, detailed books! Remember, you do NOT have to read every single page of a book at this point; skim the book for interesting photos and captions to read and discuss. Use your child’s book choice to learn about their interests and to share your thoughts on various topics.

New books are coming in!

Our first book orders are arriving and we are adding new titles and new copies to our collection. We are especially excited about a bunch of new DOG books that tell about different dog breeds and about various service dogs. (Foxie is thrilled for kids to read about how dogs help people!)

Foxie is living her best life!

From listening to stories to checking on math problems to accepting bellyrubs, Foxie is taking her job very seriously! Every day we are grateful for having Foxie as our school dog.

Author Day is scheduled!

We are looking forward to hosting Alabama author Irene Latham on Tuesday, March 22, 2022! While you may have encountered Latham’s chapter books, picture books, or poetry books, did you know that her recent book The Cat Man of Aleppo written with Homewood artist Karim Shamsi-Basha was awarded a 2021 Caldecott Honor Award to the illustrator Yuko Shimizu?!?! I can’t wait for Latham to share that experience with us! As usual, we will offer students an opportunity in early January to pre-order autographed copies of her books and then we will spend the day with her, sharing the excitement of writing, reading, and being curious.Checkout her website: www.irenelatham.com

Turkey Trot

The 21st Annual Turkey Trot will be held Sunday, November 7 at 2:00. The parent volunteers are THE main reason this event is always a huge success. Anyone interested in volunteering, please email Marianne Jenkins (mariannejenkins@outlook.com) or Millie Minton (millieminton@gmail.com). There will also be a sign up genius for volunteers.

Mercedes Kids’ Marathon (MKM)

The students are doing a great job logging miles every week during PE. Please continue registering online for the MKM. Please see the link below for sign up instructions and deadlines:

Mercedes Kids' Marathon

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO LOG YOUR CHILD’S MILES AT HOME.  WE ARE DOING THAT AT SCHOOL.  The only thing the parents need to do is register.  All Edgewood students are logging the necessary miles to participate in this fun event so I encourage you to sign them up so they can run their 26th mile in February. Hope you will join in the fun.

Fall Fitness Test

This month we will be administering the physical fitness assessment. Grades K-5 participate in the fitness test but only grades 2-5 have their scores recorded. The four areas tested are upper body strength (push-ups), abdominal strength (sit-ups), cardiovascular endurance (pacer test) and flexibility (V-Sit Test). The two weeks prior to the fitness test we practiced the test so that the students could get accustomed to hearing the tone and the cadence of each test.

Hi Edgewood Families!

Second graders are hard at work on their Veterans Day Program. It will be on November 9th at 9:30 am (families of Autrey, Gambill, Mitchell) and 12:30 pm (families of McClusky, Graves, Hollings, Robinson).

The next 3rd grade showcase will be at the PTO meeting on November 18th. Students from Swann and Moore will be doing a short performance of an activity they have been doing in music class!

4th Graders will be performing Wright!, a musical based on the Wright brothers, in January. Auditions will begin the week after Thanksgiving; please keep an eye out for information on this!

Edgewood Choir is off to a great start. Thank you to the parents and guardians who get up a little early on Thursday mornings. I have so enjoyed making music with this group!

Sadie Wall, Music Teacher

Yearbook orders will resume on Monday, November 1st. The cost is $40 per yearbook and can be purchased through the PTO membership toolkit. The deadline to order will be January 31st. Please reach out to Jenny Denson with any questions: jenny.denson@gmail.com.

Red Ribbon Week will be October 25th - October 29th. Our friends at Shades Cahaba and Hall Kent will celebrate with us by focusing on protective factors.

Protective factors are conditions or attributes in individuals, families, communities, or the larger society that mitigate or eliminate risk, thereby increasing the health and well-being of children and families.

Monday - Love Yourself & Love Others

Healthy friendships and relationships are important to our health.  Tell someone the reason you like them.

Tuesday - Don't Eat or Play Alone

Introduce yourself, "Hi I'm ________, what's your name?" to at least 3 people.

Wednesday - Let's Get Moving for a Healthy Body

Make sure you're active during PE and recess.  A healthy person shows good sportsmanship.  Compliment someone, give them a thumbs up, or an air high five!

Thursday - Practice Gratitude.

Think of 3 things you are thankful for.  Share with a friend if you'd like!

Friday - Wear Homewood Colors

Wear red, white, and blue to celebrate our healthy community.
