Happy New Year, Edgewood Families! We hope you had a wonderful and relaxing winter break! We’ve been busy behind the scenes, getting ready for some fantastic spring events, including the Talent Show and Spring Festival.
A HUGE thank you to everyone who contributed to the Jingle Fund – it was a massive success! With your generosity, we raised more than $7,400, and thanks to a little extra from the PTO, we were able to send 78 staff members into the holiday season with a special gift of $95 each. We are so grateful for our amazing Edgewood families and staff!
Teacher Appreciation Week is coming up from February 24th-28th, and we’ll be collecting donations starting at the end of January. All donations are optional but greatly appreciated! Our fantastic hospitality co-chairs, Jessie Barry and Elizabeth Adams, are already brainstorming ways to spoil our amazing staff during this special week. Stay tuned for more details!

Happy New Year! Welcome back, Edgewood families. I hope you all had a wonderful winter break. Having time with family and friends is always nice, but it is also great to get back into the routine. We are thankful to spend our days with the Edgewood students, and we look forward to a wonderful semester ahead. We have many great events to look forward to, such as the Talent Show, Spring Festival, 4th Grade Family Coding Night, and so much more!
We look forward to our House Days this semester on January 31st, February 18th, March 7th, April 16th, and May 9th. We will do a special service project this semester and are excited about February House Day being a lunch day.
Please start spreading the word that our Kindergarten Preview Day for students attending kindergarten in the 2025-2026 school year will take place on May 6th. More information will be coming out very soon. For more information, families should monitor the Edgewood and Homewood City Schools Instagram accounts. We are planning for this event to take place at Edgewood and is an excellent way for our upcoming kindergarten students and families to see our school and meet our teachers. The school district will also communicate Information about registering new and returning students in the coming weeks.
Again, we are looking forward to a fantastic semester. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Take care!

Second Semester is Booked in the Library for 2025!
From January through May, our students will continue to meet outstanding authors/illustrators through our BookBreak livestream author visits. Up next, we will meet: Mac Barnett, Cece Bell, Melanie Watt, Joanna Ho, Megan McDonald, Thanhha Lai, and several others! We are so grateful to the PTO for giving us the opportunity to learn from the creators of some of our favorite books! A common theme is emerging: rewrite, rewrite, rewrite! Each author has emphasized the importance of revisions and edits in their writing process. One even mused that they should be called "Rewriters" instead of "Writers!"
Sora Update: If you would like for your child’s HCS Digital Library Sora to connect to the JCLC Digital Library, you will now need to use a valid HPL library card number. We are happy to help you or your child set up this connection. Please note: if a student uses a parent’s library card number, the student will still only have access to Juvenile materials. However, any items the student borrows will also appear on the parent’s Libby app. Students do not need an HPL library card number to access the HCS Digital Library Sora on its own. (We understand this can be a little confusing and are here to help you and your child navigate this valuable resource!)

March comes in like a lion!
-
From Feb 28 through March 6, we will host our annual Dedicate a Book. This is a voluntary opportunity for students, families, and teachers to select a book to dedicate to our library. For $15, a reader can choose from a selection of books we want for our library, dedicate the book themselves or in honor/memory of someone, and then be the first to checkout the new library book. Classes will have a time to visit the library to make a selection and to see what new books are being added. Parents are also welcome to drop in.
-
We end that week with our annual Read Across Edgewood Celebration, but as a one day event coinciding with…
-
House Day on Friday, March 7, and with…
-
our annual House Service Project for the year! Students are invited to bring a new or gently used paperback book that will be donated to The Assistance League of Birmingham to support local readers in need of books. Then…
-
during our House Meeting, we will have a Mysterious Reading sure to surprise everyone!

|
|
We then catch our breath and head into the end of the year: All library books must be returned by Monday, May 12. Students are doing a great job this year keeping track of their library books. Accidents, however, do happen and books get lost. Borrowing library books is a great way to practice responsibility and admitting when mistakes have happened. If your child ever thinks they have misplaced a book, please encourage them to speak to us so we can all start hunting. Most of the time missing books show up…they love to hide under beds! If you feel certain the book is lost, do NOT buy a replacement copy; please contact us on what to do as we use a library vendor who guarantees the binding to withstand our readers!
Let us know if you have any questions regarding books and the library.

Edgewood Families,
It’s an exciting semester ahead in 2025!
The Homewood City Schools Foundation granted Edgewood’s music team a class set of ukuleles; students in Edgewood’s older grades can look forward to learning this instrument soon!
Kindergarten Informance dates will be announced soon for this spring. Adults will be invited to attend a music class with their child. What do we do in music class? What do we learn? What surprises do these littles have in store for you? Come dance and sing along with Mr. Wall and find out! This will be during the school day later in the spring.
The annual fourth grade program for this year is extra special: fourth graders will have the opportunity to invite an adult to an interactive performance using our brand-new ukuleles. This will be during the school day later in the spring. Mr. Wall is excited to jam along with you!
Third grade will have a time to shine during the annual Specials Showcase. This date will be announced soon. These performances will be a brief representation of what students are doing during music class: dancing, singing, playing instruments. You’ll be impressed at these third graders’ capabilities!
As the Wall family looks forward to welcoming their baby girl into the world, we’d like to introduce you to Mrs. Wall’s maternity leave sub: Ms. Rhonda Tucker. Ms. Tucker was a beloved music teacher at Shades Cahaba for many years, and your children will love playing instruments with her this spring. I look forward to seeing your children again in August. If you need anything while I am out on leave, please contact my teaching partner, Matt Wall, or Rhonda Tucker.

Shop Local, Support Edgewood!
Each month, we’ll be highlighting a local business that generously donates a portion of their sales to our school through Edgewood Night Out! Your support of these fantastic community partners not only benefits our school but also strengthens our local economy. We appreciate the loyalty of our neighbors on the Edgewood Strip and ask that you help us show our appreciation by patronizing these businesses, during Edgewood Night Out and otherwise!
Otey's Tavern:
- How long have you been in business in the Edgewood Strip? A little over a year
- What is the best part of being a part of the Edgewood community? It's a true community that takes care of and supports each other. There is always something fun going on, and everyone is very active in showing up and supporting.
- Why do you choose to support Edgewood Elementary? Because it's a great school with wonderful teachers, parents and kids! They are always supportive of us. My dad was a teacher and we have a special place in our heart for teachers.
- What is your favorite menu item? That's a hard question, and I can't give you just one. I'll give you three favorites: cheeseburger, hot wings, or the blackened chicken sandwich.
