Edgewood PTO has been busy! This change of season brings our fall events,  My Pals Day and Turkey Trot, and PTO fall grants for our teachers and staff.

We are excited that our events are back to normal this year! So jump in, get involved, and mark your calendars so you don’t miss out on the fun!

Our first fall event is My Pals Day (formerly GrandPals Day). The event is Friday, October 28th and we look forward to welcoming all Pals to Edgewood! Also, get ready to cheer on all the fabulous runners racing in the Turkey Trot on Sunday, November 6th at 2pm! This long tradition is a one-mile fun run, and all students are welcome to participate.

If you haven’t had a chance to check out Edgewood Gear, head over to our website. You will find new items and gear rolling out at our two fall events including winter wear. Thank you to our fabulous Edgewood Gear team, Katie Beth Owens, Ashley Kimball, and Stefanie Hudson for designing, creating, and stocking up our store. All profits from Edgewood Gear go directly back to the PTO.

Each month, the Hospitality Committee provides a “Staff Happy” to let all our staff and faculty know how much we appreciate what they do. These "happies" can include coffee and muffins, a special lunch, a small gift, etc... Our Hospitality Chairs, Kate Thompson and Stephanie Vann, are leading the charge on treating the staff and teachers to fabulous “happies” this year, and the September treat was a hit. Thank you to our Hospitality Committee and all who gave to provide the treats!

And finally, mark your calendars for our upcoming PTO meeting, October 6th at Noon in the library with special guest Carlye Dungeon, Homewood City Schools Foundation. Please join us in person or via zoom! We will share the grants that our PTO awarded to the staff and teachers at our November meeting.

As always, thank you for supporting our school and our PTO with both your time and donations. You help make Edgewood the best it can be!

Sincerely,

Erin Greggs

October is here, and the weather has been beautiful. This month we have many things to look forward to including parent conferences, report cards, school pictures, fall break, My Pals Day, and a house day. We are thankful for a PTO and community that supports us by helping with and being present for these events.

Please remember to be kind to our neighbors. Arrival and dismissal are busy, and many of our neighbors are reporting that driveways and streets are being blocked. Keep in mind that there is parking at the Edgewood Presbyterian Church that may be utilized for those who would like to be walkers. This is a great option instead of parking on Westover, Virginia, and other streets that are extremely crowded. Be mindful of one-way streets and streets that are closed (Virginia is marked with Do Not Enter signs during these times). Keep in mind that College Avenue does not become two lanes until after you pass Westover. Cars turning off of Westover should be allowed to turn left. I hope these tips are helpful to you all. Let’s all be kind to and patient with one another.

Many Edgewood teachers were awarded with foundation grants this past week. Grants that were awarded include number blocks, book club materials, books, STEM hovercrafts for 5th grade, conferences for teachers to attend, and more. PTO grant applications have been sent to our teachers so that they may begin applying for fall PTO grants. We look forward to seeing what is awarded to our teachers by our PTO. There are so many great things going on this fall at Edgewood.

School safety continues to be a priority. We are working with our safety committee to make adjustments in order to make our plan better. Our school resource officer, Kevin Batchelor, is a huge asset to us. He cares deeply about the safety of our students and is always available to us when he is needed. We have practiced an intruder drill once this school year and have had one fire drill. A weather drill will be coming up this month. Practicing for all of these scenarios not only helps us to be prepared but also allows our safety committee the ability to see what works and how we can improve. Thank you for being understanding and patient as these drills are conducted.

Ashley and I are thankful to work in a school with so much family and community support. We appreciate the kindness that is shown to us. Please know that we are here for you all. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us if you have any questions.

We are checking out books! Students may visit the Library any time that fits their teacher’s schedule, but each class also has a fixed Library Weekly time where they know that they will get to the Library. We are always glad to help them find their best fit book.

We finally awarded our Summer Reading Blackout Bingo students with their extra prize: a photo of the student with Foxie! Foxie is so proud of these readers and loved posing with their smiling faces!!

Remember, books do NOT like water so help make sure that your child’s water bottle is not leaking. We lose a fair number of books each year to water damage. If we are notified quickly, we can sometimes save a wet book, but once mold sets in, there’s not much to do.

If your child misplaces their Library book, please notify us so that we can all be on the lookout. Students with an overdue book may not checkout another book; but if we are notified from home, we will let the student continue to checkout while the family looks for the missing book. If a book is truly lost, the replacement fee is $20; please do not buy a replacement copy yourself as we use a Library vendor to get super strong bindings on the books.

We want our library to be a busy, loud place where students can feed their curiosity. Our collection of 10,000 is kept in shape through our wonderful PTO parent volunteers. We are grateful to these who quickly get the books back on the shelves in their right spots…and we average 7,000-8,000 checkout a month!

We are also grateful to our 5th grade students who have taken on the Leadership Opportunity of STORMing the Shelves. Each 5th grade student has selected 2 shelves in our Library and during each visit to the Library, they STORM their shelves: S (check that the Spines are facing out) T (all of the books are standing Tall) O (the books are in correct Order) R (the books are on the Right shelf) M (what More can they do to make their shelf look good). After a 2 year break from this student activity, Mrs. Morgan and I are so happy to see the shelves looking so nice and inviting!!

My Pals Day at Edgewood will be Friday, October 28, 2022, during the school day. This event is formerly known as Grandpals Day. The name change is to be inclusive of all the special relationships Edgewood kids have - with aunts, uncles, neighbors, friends, friends who are family, etc! All Pals welcome!

Our Pals will start in the gym at their assigned time to be greeted by Dr. Tate and Foxie and then dismissed to their child's classroom to meet the teachers and do a fun activity. We need more volunteers to help lead the Pals to their classrooms. Sign up here!

All students would love a Pal, however some of our students will not have a grand or neighbor available that day. Can you spend 30 minutes with an awesome kid and learn about their time in their classroom? It’s an easy commitment with huge benefits for all. Sign up here if interested!

We can’t wait to celebrate our Pals - please join us and volunteer to help!

Edgewood House Report

10 Houses: 1 Family!

Welcome to the Edgewood Elementary School House Report!

Last year, Edgewood began the adventure crafted by the Ron Clark Academy of Atlanta. Our students were each selected into one of 10 Houses to provide an opportunity for students to develop relationships with students across the grades and teachers. Our 10 Houses have unique names, borrowed from other languages, which represent exemplary traits and characteristics we all aspire to develop.

“Hivo”- Hungarian means Confidence

“Assidu”- French means Diligence

“Mahalo”- Hawaiian means Gratitude

“Druh”  - Czech means Kindness

“Xingfu”- Chinese means Happiness

“Coraje”- Spanish  means Courage

“Yurushi”- Japanese means Compassion

“Jihye”- Korean means Wisdom

“Azim” - Turkish means Perseverance

“Stima”- Romanian means Respect

This year, we have taken the next step to create 5 Dens within each House. Dens allow for smaller, cozier groups where Housemates can develop even closer relationships. (We love how the kids have figured out that the Den is the cozy room in the House!)

Each month we have a House Day where Houses or Dens or groups of Dens will meet to share activities selected to develop these relationships. We encourage everyone to dress in their House colors and be open to sharing and caring.

See below for our House Day celebration days. (Meetings are usually held from 1:30 to 2:15.)

A favorite part of being at Edgewood is the strong family feel we all experience, whether as a teacher, student, or parent. Whenever families try new things, there is chaos at first, but we are finding our new House program to bring exciting benefits and opportunities to take our family-ness to the next level. We hope that you enjoy seeing and hearing about your child’s participation and growth in this adventure.
